Southart-Parkway Edition
1980s
After completing The Birds of America, John James Audubon dedicated the
remaining years of his life to drawing mammals for his second and final major publication,
The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. With the Quadrupeds, Audubon
again produced a beautiful wildlife are series that became a definitive scientific
study on American fauna. Today these mammal lithographs surprise and charm the many
persons who are aware only of Audubon's Birds.
In the mid nineteen eighties Southart-Parkway endeavored to create the first full
sized reproductions of Audubon's Quadrupeds. In order to create unmatched prints
of investment quality the company used the superb set of Audubon lithographs owned
by the Princeton University's library, and the highest quality photo-offset lithography
offered by Princeton Polychrome Press, the predecessor to Princeton Audubon Limited.
Special 100% cotton rag hand made and watermarked paper was imported from England
for this limited edition of 750. These are direct-camera reproductions. Each print
was hand numbered and embossed with the Southart-Parkway seal. These are not mere
posters, nor are they small Octavo sized prints. These are investment quality lithographs
made to exacting standards which far surpass the industry norm. Paper size is 21
by 28 inches.
The owners of Southart-Parkway began their work with the mammals of Texas. A set
of six highly sought after images. The next group of four images were from the Southeast
and then two images from the Northeast were completed before production ceased in
the late eighties.
